Candidates' Weakness and Suggested Remedies

 

 

Candidate could not:

-  state the factors that should be considered when siting a chemical industry;
-  state the advantages of using a catalyst over high temperatures in chemical reactions;
-  state the factors that may influence the value of electron affinity;
-  explain carbohydrates;
- give corresponding correctly written and balanced equations for suggested methods of preparing salts;
-  explain why certain properties of Beryllium and its compounds differ from those of magnesium and its compounds.
-  write a balanced equation for the reaction between iodine and aqueous sodium trioxothiosulphate (VI);
- describe how to determine a proportion of hardness in a given sample of water;
- explain why water is referred to as universal solvent.

 

The following remedies were however suggested:

Candidates should:

- be familiar with the examination syllabus;
- understand the demands of the questions before responding to them;
- learn to explain concepts using appropriate technical terms,
- improve on their communication skills when responding to examination questions.
