Weakness and Remedies

 

Candidate could not:

  • state the factors that should be considered when siting a chemical industry;
  • state the advantages of using a catalyst over high temperatures in chemical reactions;
  • state the factors that may influence the value of electron affinity;
  • explain carbohydrates;
  • give corresponding correctly written and balanced equations for suggested methods of preparing salts;
  • explain why certain properties of Beryllium and its compounds differ from those of magnesium and its compounds.
  • write a balanced equation for the reaction between iodine and aqueous sodium trioxothiosulphate (VI);
  • describe how to determine a proportion of hardness in a given sample of water;
  • explain why water is referred to as universal solvent.

The following remedies were however suggested:

  • candidates should be familiar with the examination syllabus
  • understand the demands of the questions before responding to them;
  • learn to explain concepts using appropriate technical terms,
  • improve on their communication skills when responding to examination questions.
