Question 2:     (a) Explain the term citizenship education.
(b) State four reasons for effective citizenship education of Nigerian
      youths.
This was another popular question. The performance of most candidates who answered it was good as they really understood its demands. However, some candidates did not do well in the (b) part and they scored low marks by merely mentioning the required points without giving full explanations. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:

             (a)        (i)        Citizenship education is a process of enlightening or training citizens on their
rights and responsibilities.       
                        (ii)        Citizenship education is a form of education given to citizens with a view to
making them responsible individuals who are committed to the meaningful development of their society.
(iii)       Citizenship education is a type of education which instills desirable values,
attitudes, skills and knowledge into individuals to enable them participate in the
affairs of their group or adjust functionally as good citizens.

(b)  Effective citizenship education helps to:

  1.        sensitize Nigerian youths on their duties and rights as citizens.
  2.        produce responsible, well-informed and self-reliant Nigerian youths.
  3.        inculcate the right values and attitudes into the youths for the development of the  

       society.

  1.        help citizens especially youths identify national problems and proffer solutions.
  2.        produce enlightened youths who are politically and nationally conscious.
  3.        instill in the youths high moral standards which are required for the development

of the country.
(vii)      encourage national integration and nation building.
                        (viii)      prepare the youths for future leadership roles.

  1. instill in youths a sense of national consciousness and patriotism towards their

society and the country at large.

  1. provide the youths with sound knowledge and skills required by them to actively

participate in the process of democratic governance in the society e.g. voting, standing for election, protesting against bad policies and constructive criticism of leaders among others.

  1. inform citizens of the activities of government in a democratic society.
  2. educate citizens on the importance of rules and regulations in the society e.g. rule

of law.
