  2. State four advantages of self-service.

Most candidates who attempted the question did well in parts 3a and 3b. However, most of them did not attempt the 3c. This may be attributed to the fact that it is an application question and that the candidates could not interpret it as such.
The expected responses to the question include:

3(a) Self service is a system of retailing where customers walk in and shop without assistance.



3(b) Advantages of self-service
i. It increases sales.

ii. It encourages impulse buying.

iii. It reduces overhead costs as few sales assistants are needed.

iv. It facilitates one step shopping/variety of goods.

v. It saves time and labour by eliminating bargaining./Prices are attached to the product.

3(c) Five changes necessary for the conversion of a stall to a self-service store
i. There may be a need to register a full fledge company if the self service store will operate in another name.

ii. The need to hire a bigger shop with space to allow free movement inside the store.

iii. The need to purchase trolleys, shelves, baskets for the new store.

iv. The need to install security devices such as cameras and security glasses.

v. Check out points will be provided with point of sale machines to serve customers.

vi. The need for advertisement to attract customers to the store.

vii. Training of staff who will serve as store attendants on how to act and monitor customers to prevent pilfering.

viii. Provision of merchandising facilities to attract customers
