Computer Studies Paper 2, WASSCE (SC), 2017

Question 1

(a)  What are input devices?
      (b)  List two input devices.
      (c)  State two uses of logic gates.
      (d) Draw and label the logic gate for:
         (i)         OR gate;

             (ii)        AND gate.

Observation

  • Input devices are peripherals /hardware/ devices connected to the computer that are used to send data/ information/ signals/ commands to the computer system/computer/system. Or Input devices are peripherals /hardware/ devices that allow users to interact with/control the computer system / computer/ digital electronics machine.
  • EXAMPLES OF INPUT DEVICES

  • Keyboard/MIDI keyboard
  • Light pen/ pen-input
  • Mouse
  • Joystick
  • Scanner
  • Cameras/Digital camera/ Webcam
  • Microphone
  • Card reader
  • Joystick
  • Finger print scanner/Reader
  • Trackball
  • Magnetic-stripe Reader
  • Video capture hardware
  • Bar code reader
  • Touch pads
  • Electronics whiteboard
  • Optical Mark Recognition (OMR)
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR)
  • Magnetic Ink Character Reader (MICR)
  • Magnetic tape drive
  • Punch card reader
  • Game pad

(c)        USES OF LOGIC GATES

  • It is the building blocks of digital electronics
  • It is used in constructing alarms
  • It is used as a decision making tool
  • It is used in push-button lock circuit
  • It is used in traffic light controller
  • It is used in light-activated burglar
  • It is used in safety thermostat, an automatic watering system
  • It is used in the Arithmetic and Logic Unit (ALU)
  • It is used to build digital and complex integrated circuits
  • It is used in error checking in FM transmission.

(d)       (i)         OR LOGIC GATE

(ii)        AND LOGIC GATE

The question required that candidates should define input devices, give examples of input devices, state uses of logic gates and draw logic gates.

Most candidates demonstrated good knowledge of input devices but majority of the candidates were unable to draw logic gates.
