Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that part (a) of the question was very popular among the candidates and they performed well in it. Majority of the candidates were reported to have identified the device correctly. They were also able to correctly identify the labelled parts and gave their functions but in part (b), their performance was reported not to be as good as it was in part (a).
In part (a), candidates were expected to recognize the diagram as that of a printer. The labelled parts were:
I – paper tray/paper support/printer paper hold and it is used for loading/feeding/supporting the paper into the printer.
II – Universal Serial Bus (USB) cord/cable or data cable. It is used for connecting the the printer to a computer.
III – printed document/printed output.
IV – power button or power switch or on/off switch. It is used for putting on/off the printer.
V – power cable. It is used for connecting the printer to a power/electricity source.
Some maintenance procedures to ensure the continued functioning of the printer included:
Lubricating the mechanical parts,
covering the printer when not in use,
regular servicing/maintenance by a professional,
removing the printer from the power source when not in use,
cleaning the printer regularly,
connecting the printer to a power source via a voltage regulator or UPS.

In part (b), it was reported that majority of the candidates’ responses indicated poor understanding of Spreadsheets. Candidates were expected to respond as follows:
In part (b)(i), the type of data in row 1 was text.
In part (b)(ii), ETI JAMES’ Project score was in cell E4.
In part (b)(iii), one of the following functions could be used to enter ADE OLU’s total score: =sum(C2:F2); =sum(F2:C2); =sum(C2, D2, E2, F2).
In part (b)(iv), one of the following ways could be used to fit JOHN PATRICK into the cell:

  • Right click on B5, select format cells, click on alignment tab, select shrink to fit and select ok;
  • Drag an increase the column width to the right
  • Double click on the gridline between column B and C.

In part (b)(v), one of the following procedures would copy the function/formula in question 1(b)(iii):

  • Highlight cell G2, press ctrl + C to copy the content of cell G2, highlight the other cells on column G and press Ctrl + V to paste the formula
  • Click on G2, move the pointer to the bottom right hand corner of cell G2, hold down the left mouse and drag downwards to cell G11 (last/required cell)

In part (b)(vi), the required function was If function.
