Question 3

(a) Define the following terms with respect to amplifiers:
(i) voltage gain;
(ii) decibels.

b)

In Figure 6 above, calculate the:
(i) voltage gain;
(ii) voltage gain in decibels (dB).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
OBSERVATION

The expected answers were:
(a) (i) Voltage gain is the ratio of the output voltage to the input voltage.
(ii) The standard unit for expressing gain or loss and relative power levels in amplifiers.
(b) (i) Voltage gain(Av)
Av = AVl X AV2 X AV3
= 20 x 50 x 10
= 10,000
               (ii)    Voltage gain in decibels (dB)
dB= 10 log 10000
= 10 x4
=40dB
The question was on Amplifiers. The question was less popular. Only a few candidates attempted this. The performance was fair.
