Question 4
- State two functions each of the following parts of the sewing machine.
- stop motion screw.
- tension disc.
- feed dog.
- presser foot lever
Observation
Many of the candidates mistook the function of presser foot lever for that of presser foot. Many described balance wheel as part of the machine used in winding bobbin on a thread but it is an improvised means and not the original function. Most of the answers given by candidates in these functions of the parts of the machine were not specific. They were expected to give their answers as follows:
- Stop motion screw
- It is tightened to allow the needle move when sewing
- It is loosened to make threading of bobbin possible.
- Tension disc
 - It enables firm and quality stitches to be made.
    - It regulates the tightness of the tension placed on the threaded needle.
- Feed dog
- It pulls the fabric along during stitching.
- It holds the fabrics tight against the foot.
(iv)        Presser foot lever/lifter
    – It is used for raising up the foot when stitching is completed.
    (v)         Balance wheel
-It is turned forward or backward to set a machine in motion during   sewing.
-It is used to raise or lower the needle into the fabric.
