Weakness/Remedies
Strength

Candidates' Weakness

(1) Inability to read and interpret questions correctly
Most candidates could not differentiate between various action words used in questioning such as state, explain, discuss, describe, outline, highlight. list, etc.

It is adviceable that candidates familiarize themselves with such verbs and know their correct meaning in order to properly decode the questions and its demands before answering them.

(2) Inadequate preparation for the examination:
Many candidates did not prepare adequately for the examination as evidenced by their little knowledge of some aspects of the syllabus. Some of the candidates performed poorly in map work so much that they even did map reduction and enlargement which was not asked in the question paper. Candidates are advised to start preparation for the examination long enough so that they could cover the syllabus before the commencement of the examination.

(3) Poor presentation of answers
Some candidates presented their answers in very bad and unreadable handwriting, with poor grammatical expressions. Incoherent presentation which made it difficult for the examiners to decode what the candidates have written. This led to poor performance.

Candidates are advised to take English Language, which is the language of expression seriously. This will enhance their communication skills.

(4) Poor presentation of diagrams and maps
Questions requiring maps and diagrams were not popular in some centres.

Teachers should emphasis the use of maps and diagrams in their teachings and encourage candidates to use diagrams in answering questions when necessary.
