The expected answers are as follows: 

Many candidates did not attempt this question and performance of those that attempted it was poor. In question (a) (b) (c) many candidates avoided this question and those that attempted it could not answer it correctly.

9 (a)(i) ASPHYXIA

Asphyxia is a state of suspended breathing; due to lack of enough oxygen in the lungs

                   
(ii)    DESCRIPTION OF FIRST AID TREATMENT GIVEN TO A VICTIM OF ASPHYXIA

  • remove or loose tight clothing around neck or chest and waist
  • place victim’s head downwards with the face turned to one side
  • press on the chest and back to expel blockage as much as possible.
  • turn victim onto his back, push the head well backward
  • get assistance to continue external heart compression/artificial respiration
  • continue until spontaneous heart beat and respiration is restored
  • take the victim to the nearest hospital

  • it aids absorption of nutrient.
