(a) State two deficiency of sodium in humans.   [2 marks]
(b) Mention the food substances which each of the following digestive       
enzymes act upon  in humans: (i) ptyalin; (ii) pepsin. [2 marks]

Observation

 

 

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor. In part (a) some candidates did not answer it correctly, having difficulty in spellings. In part (b) they did fair in it.


The expected answer is as follows:


(a) Deficiencies of sodium in humans

  • dehydration;
  • oedema;
  • muscle cramp;
  • kidney failure;
  • hyponatremia;
  • hypotension/low blood pressure.                                                 

 

(b) Name food substances the following enzymes act on
(i) ptyalin – cooked starch/named;

    (ii) pepsin – proteins/named.
