Observation


Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was fair. In part (a) majority of the candidates gave correct answers, but some gave reasons why drug addiction should be discouraged instead of smoking. In part (b) many candidates misconstrued the question for motorists rather than pedestrians.


The expected answers are as follow:


  1. Reasons why smoking should be discouraged
    • risk of cancer.

    • respiratory diseases/named.

    • can cause pre-mature birth/still birth.

    • low birth weight.

    • eye irritation.

    • can cause indigestion.

    • economic loss.

    • stained teeth.

    • bad/foul mouth/body odour.

  2. Ways of preventing accident for pedestrians.
    • look both sides of the road before crossing.

    • public enlightenment on road use.

    • avoid use of headset/ear piece when on the road.

    • use of zebra crossing/pavement/pedestrian bridges.

    • walk in lighted pedestrian designated areas/wear light coloured/reflective wear at night/use traffic light.

    • always walk on the left side of the road/facing on coming vehicles.

    • pupils should undergo road crossing drills.

    • enforcement of pedestrian laws.
