      The diagram below illustrates a broken bone in the lower limb. Study the diagram carefully and answer questions1(a),1(b),1(c) and 1(d)

  1. (i)   What type of injury is shown in the diagram?                        [1 mark]

(ii) Mention the bone broken a shown in the diagram                   [1 mark]

  1.  State three observable features of the injured part                       [3 marks]                              

(c) List two materials needed to support the injured part                    [2 marks]
(d) State three First Aid treatment that should be applied to
the affected part                                                                             [3 marks]

     

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. In part (a) (i) few candidates correctly named the type of injury in the fractured leg, many candidates mentioned wrong answers such as compound fracture and simple fracture, in (a)(ii) candidates also mentioned wrong answer such as humerus instead of femur.  In part (b) candidates correctly stated observable features of the injured leg.  In part (c) candidates also correctly listed materials needed to support the injured leg.  In part (d) candidates also stated First Aid treatment that should be applied to the affected part.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

-           place the affected part in a convenient position
-           stop bleeding if necessary
-           cover the open wound with dressing
-           support with splint/immobilize
-           bandage the affected part.
-           carry on a stretcher for medical attention
