Observation

This was also a popular question and was fairly answered by the candidates. Most candidates who answered this question only commented summarily on the roles of educated elites, the press, trade unions, knowledge of writing etc. The focus of the question was how Western education and its acquisition influenced the development and progress of nationalism in Nigeria.  The following points were expected to be mentioned by candidates to get good mark:

    (i)The acquired knowledge enabled the nationalists to be aware of the exploitation of the country; hence they kicked against it;

    (ii) The elite formed strong trade unions in their respective work places which cooperated with the nationalist struggle;

    (iii)   The educated class formed different political parties to agitate for self rule in Nigeria.

  1. (iv)   The knowledge in writing was used in the media to influence the

   masses against colonial domination in Nigeria;

    (v) Through the schools, local vocabularies were taught and translated in variousprint media which were read.  This helped to create awareness of the effects of
    foreign domination.
