History Paper 2 WASSCE (PC), 2016

Question 1

Highlight any five reasons for the study of Nigerian history.

Observation

This question was very unpopular among the candidates and the few ones who attempted  it performed poorly.  It required the candidates to highlight the reasons for the study of Nigerian history. Many of the candidates discussed the reasons adequately while few of them listed their points without further explanation. Specifically, the candidates were expected to state the following points:

(i)         Studying of Nigerian history makes one to know hidden facts about our societies e.g. the cultivation of yam was indigenous to Nigeria.
(ii)        Like all other disciplines, we study Nigeria history for its own sake.
(iii)       It is also studied to promote patriotism or love for Nigeria.
(iv)       It enables one to be tolerant of values and culture of other ethnic groups.
(v)        It enables one to avoid the mistakes of the past, as we learn about achievement and failures of our ancestors or past.
(vi)       It enables one to earn a living as one could be employed to teach the subject in schools, make             research or write a book for sale etc.
(vii)      It helps us to develop a critical mind, as one will be able to analyse events objectively before arriving at a conclusion.
(viii)     It enables one to identify his origin, heritage and culture and take pride in them.

  1. It is a source of pleasure and excitement.
  2. To redress the misconception that Nigeria had no history before the arrival of Europeans.
