Question 2

     

    (a)  Name any three items produced by Goldsmiths in pre-colonial Nigeria.
    (b)  Highlight any four ways in which the gold industry benefited Nigerians in pre-colonial times.

Observation

This question was popular among the candidates. A good number of those that answered it were able to identify items produced by goldsmiths in pre-colonial times while in part (b) many of the candidates could not remember the relevance of gold industry to burial of the dead, its use for sandals and decorations and scored low marks.  However, candidates were expected to mention the under listed points.

    1. Currencies
    2. Cups
    3. Rings
    4. Bangles/Bracelets
    5. Necklaces
    6. Basins
    7. Jugs
    8. Crowns
    9. Earrings
    1. The industry provided employment to those who were engaged in it.
    2. It promoted income/ wealth.
    3. Gold ornaments were used for decoration.
    4. Chiefs, wealthy persons and others used gold ornaments on festive occasions.
    5. Gold ornaments were used as items of gift.
    6. Gold ornaments were also used in the burial of the dead.
    7. Gold ornaments were used as mark of political office.
    8. Crowns and Sandals were plaited with gold.
    9. It enhanced the prestige of the people and the ruler.
    10. Gold was a source of beautification especially for women.
    11. It served as an important item of trade.
