Question 10

In Senghor’s I will pronounce your name Naett is a symbol of African Beauty, strength and mystery. Discuss.

Observation

Most of the candidates responded to the perspective of the symbol of beauty but
found it difficult to highlight the aspects of strength and mystery of the
symbolism in the poem.  The poet idolizes Naett’s beauty in a language that
simultaneously appeals to all the senses.  Naett’s beauty which symbolizes
strength and resilience in the face of all circumstances.  The poet described the
girl in a mysterious manner with such expression as “my night, my sun”.  Naett’s
beauty is also the beauty of Africa. 
            Few candidates attempted this question.
