Question 5

Discuss the roles of Samneric in the novel.

A good number of candidates attempted this question.  However, many of them did not give details.

Samneric is the nickname given to the twins, Sam and Eric in Lord of the Flies because they were rarely apart from each other and it was difficult for other boys to tell them apart. The role of Samneric in the novel includes:

  • They participate actively in the gathering of the boys to form a community of organised boys on the island.
  • They make sure that the fire set up for rescue purpose does not go out.
  • They are the only boys left with Ralph, Piggy and Simon after Jack announced his feast.
  • They represent the young weaker boys on the island.
  • They enhance Ralph’s safety and the rescue of other boys.

Candidates’ performance in this question was fair.
