This was not a popular question. Only a few of the candidates were able to explain how Manfred’s downfall is caused by his lust for power.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• The struggle for the ownership of the Castle of Otranto.
• Manfred’s struggle to overturn an ancient prophecy.
• Manfred’s attempt to divorce Hippolita for not giving him a suitable heir.
• Manfred’s attempt to marry Isabella
• Manfred’s treatment of Theodore as a rival
• Manfred’s killing of Matilda. His own daughter.

Candidates’ performance in the question was fair.
