Silas is highly regarded and lives a model life in Lantern Yard where he worships with his best friend, William Dane.
Dane does not reciprocate the love Silas has for him.  He capitalizes on the weakness of Silas in relation to ‘cataleptic fit’ which Dane refers to as a visitation from the Devil.  William Dane steals the church money in the care of the sick Deacon, and he accuses Silas of the theft.  William also takes over Silas betrothed, Sarah.    This treachery leads to Silas’ loss of faith in the church as members declare him guilty of theft.  This act also strengthens Silas as he goes to Raveloe where he makes his fortunes.
