Question 5

A boy 1.2 m tall, stands 6 m away from the foot of a vertical lamp pole 4.2 m long. If the lamp is at the tip of the pole,

  1. Represent this information in a diagram.
  2. Calculate the:

(i) length of the shadow of the boy cast by the lamp;
(ii) angle of elevation of the lamp from the boy, correct to the nearest degree.

Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that the performance of candidates in this question was fair. Majority of those who answered correctly were those who were able to draw the correct diagram. Candidates were therefore encouraged to draw diagrams in such questions so that their understanding of the questions may be enhanced. Candidates were expected to respond as follows:
