Candidates' Weakness

The Chief Examiner observed that Candidates’ exhibited significant weakness in the following areas:

  1. Translation of word problems into Mathematical Expressions and Diagrams.
  2. Commercial Arithmetic
  3. Probability
  4. Geometry – Circle Theorems and Plane Geometry
  5. Adherence to rubrics of questions
  6. Reading and answering questions from graphs
  7. Approximations
  8. Measures of Dispersion – Inter – quartile Range
  9. Rates and Proportion

    SUGGESTED REMEDIES

The remedies suggested by the Chief Examiner are summarized as follows:

  1. Candidates’ should be encouraged to read questions carefully so as to understand its demand before attempting it.
  2. Teachers should endeavour to use interactive method of teaching.
  3. Teachers should give more worked problems during class lesson.
  4. Teachers and Candidates’ were encouraged to put in more effort to the teaching and learning of Geometry and Commercial Arithmetic.
  5. Teachers as well as Candidates’ are encouraged to cover the syllabus while preparing for examination for improved performance.
  6. Qualified Mathematics Teachers should be engaged to teach the subject.
  7. Teachers were encouraged to participate in the WASSCE main coordination as this would help improve on their teaching skills.
