General Mathematics Paper 2, WASSCE (PC), 2017

QUESTION 2
(a). A trader invested some money in a bank for two years at 5% per annum compound interest. If he collected an amount of ₦2, 205,000.00 for his investment, calculate the money invested.
(b)  The area of a triangle is 30 cm2. If the ratio of the height of the triangle to its base is 3:2, calculate, correct to two decimal places, the height of the triangle.

Observation

The Chief Examiner reported that most of the Candidates’ mistook simple interest for compound interest and also had little challenge in finding the height of the triangle.
In part (a), they were expected to 2,205,000 =  and simplifying to get 2,205,000 = p(1.05)2
and solving to get p =  N2,000,000.00.

In part (b), they were also expected to  where b = . Substituting into the area of a triangle,
Area = 30 = , solving to obtain h2 = 90; h =
 h = ±9.4868 cm
Height of the triangle = 9.49 cm correct to two decimal places.
