    (d)  (i)  Name the two types of lathe steadies.
    (ii) State one main use of steadies.

Observation

 

Most of the candidates who attempted this question could not provide the required responses to parts (b) and (d) 0f the question. The required responses to these part are as given below.
  (b)  Reasons why grey cast iron is used in making machine beds
It withstands compressive stresses.
It is self-lubricating.
It is easily cast.
It is hard and resistant to wear.
It has excellent vibration damping property.     

 

(d) (i)  Types of lathe steadies
Fixed steady
Travelling steady

(ii) Main uses of steadies
It is used for supporting long slender work.
It is used to prevent the workpiece for vibrating in the middle
It is used to resist the cutting force of the cutting tool.
