(a) (i) Melody writing

Either

Continue the given melody to form a passage of not less than 12 and
not more than 16 bars. Modulate to the dominant in the course of the
passage and return to the original key.

(ii) Set the text below to a suitable melody. Indicate the tempo, Phrasing and dynamic marks. Credit will given for originality of the composition and proper alignment of text to the notes.

(b)    Two-Part Writing
Add an independent flowing part below the given melody.

Observation

 Some brilliant candidates were able to tackle the questions headlong by supplying the expected answers, whereas, the weak ones among them were unable to 'do justice' to the questions. The modulation to the dominant was fairly well done.
In 1 (a)(ii), setting of text to a suitable melody, many candidates made spirited
efforts to supply correct answer(s) which was quite encouraging, whereas in
(b) - Two Part Writing, many candidates simply "harmonized" the given melody
in parallel 3rds and 6ths. Some even harmonized in parallel4ths and 5ths.
A few of the candidates who understood what Two-Part Writing is all about, did a
good jot) by adding an independent part whicb also contracted well the given
melody. As a result, they scored high marks.
In 1(c) - Four-Part Harmony, many candidates wasted their time harmonizing all
The quavers instead of treating those approached and quitted by step as non-
harmonic tones (i.e. passing tones or neighbouring tones or notes of anticipation
