Observation

Candidates were attracted to this question, their responses were below average, this is due to candidates’ inadequate knowledge of Nigeria traditional musical instruments. They should have responded to the question in the following manners:

(a) Classification of musicians

                                                                                   
(b) Characteristics of traditional African music

(i)The music is not reduced to any form of notation;

(ii)There is always a joint participation between the performers and audience;

(iii)The music is owned by the community (the author is not known/anonymous);

(vi)The music forms an integral part of everyday lives;

(v)There is usually inter-dependence of roles among instruments;

(vi)It consists of complex rhythms and polyrhythms;

(vii)It allows an extensive use of body percussion;

(viii)Melodic/rhythmic lines are mostly short and repetitive;

(ix)The form of music can be call and response, strophic or through-composed;

(x)The singing style can be solo, chorus or solo and chorus;

(xi)The texture of the music can be monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic or heterophonic.
