  1. (a)        Indicate the range of the violin on the treble staff.
    (b)        Indicate the strings on the violin with crotchet note-heads on the treble staff.
    (c)        Explain any two of the following terms and symbols associated with the                            violin:
    (i) Pizzicato;
    (ii) Con sordini;
    (iii) Double stopping;
    (iv)      

Observation

The question was popular among the candidates and candidates’ responses to this question were remarkable, though some candidates were not able to state the performance direction associated with violin and this caused them to have low performance in the question. The following points should have been highlighted in their responses for them to score high marks:

(c)        (i)         Plucked – Plucking the strings with the finger as with the harp  or guitar. It is indicated in the   score by the abbreviation pizz.
(ii)        With mute – An indication that the mute must be used.
(iii)       Stopping two or more strings simultaneously in order to get a chord on the violin.

(iii)       Harmonics – Open strings should be played together.
