Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good. In part (a)(i) many candidates correctly state duties of a spotter in gymnastic and in (a)(ii) candidates could not correctly mention safety measures to be taken by a performer during the execution of a gymnastic activity. In part (b) candidates could not correctly explain the terms vaulter, double take-off and calisthenics in gymnastics. In part ( c) candidates could not correctly state reasons why it is important to warm up before participating in gymnastic activities. In part (d) few candidates correctly stated safety precautions to be observed when performing vaulting activities in gymnastics.

The expected answers were as follows:
(a) Duties of a spotter in gymnastics
- prevents the performer from sustaining injury
- supports/guards/assists the performer
- aids mastery of a skill
- helps to correct a wrongly performed skill

(ii) Safety measures to be taken by a Performer of a gymnastic activity
- concentrate on the activity
- warm up before real activity
- discontinue activity when fatigue sets in
- wear appropriate outfit/costume
- avoid wearing ring/jewelry/long finger nail
- follow/take to instructions
- avoid performance when sick
- check the equipment

(b) Explanation of the following term as used in gymnastics
(i)        Vaulter:
A gymnast who performs vaulting activities.
(ii)       Double take off:
The act of lifting the body up on both feet to perform a gymnastic activity
(iii)      Calisthenics:
A set of rhythmic activities/performed continuously

(c) Reasons why it is important to warm-up before participating in gymnastic activities
To
- prevent injury
- activate muscles of the body
- reduce fatigue
- develop courage and confidence in performance
- supple the joints
- enhance maximum performance

(d) Safety precautions to be observed when performing vaulting activities in gymnastics
- runway/approach way should be free from obstructions
- use gymnast mat/mattress where vaulter should land
- do not change your mind half way once activities has commenced
- vaulting should be performed under supervision
- performing in.turns must be ensured
- start from known to unknown/simple to complex
- A spotter should always be available
- Use appropriate equipment for specific activities
- The performer should be physically fit to perform the activity
- inspect the equipment t be used
- Discourage the use of necklace/earrings/ornaments
- ensure adequate warm up before performance
- rules and regulations must be obeyed
