  1. (a) What type of joint is located at the
    (i) elbow:
    (ii) knee;
    (iii) shoulder;
    (iv) hip.

    (b)State four reasons why it is desirable to engage in physical fitness activities. [4 marks]

    (c) State two objectives of the ancient Olympic Games. [2 marks]

    This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was fair.  In part (a) where candidates were required to say that type of joint is located at the:

    (i)elbow
    (ii)knee
    (iii)shoulder
    (iv)hip.

Observation

Candidates wrote wrong answers such as elbow-movable, knee-synovial shoulder immovable and hip-slightly movable.  In part (b) many candidates wrote wrong answers such as to relieve pain, to aid quick recovery to save life and to stop bleeding.

In part (c) many candidates did well but few wrote out of context by writing Olympic games held in 776 BC, athletes threw the discus and ran marathon race, Olympic games took place every four years and ancient Olympic games also assisted them to beautify their body.

The expected answers were as follows:

(a)        Type of Joint located at the
            (i)         Elbow              -           hinge joint
            (ii)        Knee                -           hinge joint      
            (iii)       Shoulder          -           ball and socket joints
            (iv)       HIP                 -           ball and socket joint
                                                                                   
  (b)      Reasons for engaging in physical fitness activities
            -           for promotion of efficient performance activities
-           for prevention of fatigue
-           to enable one adapt better to stress
-           for the provision of a more healthy attitude to life
-           to enable the body resist disease attack
-           to promote healthy living
-           to promote courage for socialization
-           to promote self-discipline.

 (c)       Objectives of the ancient Olympic games

  • to serve as a basis of unity among the Greek City State;
  • to provide opportunity for fun;
  • to provide opportunity to demonstrate physical prowess;
  • to provide opportunity for relaxation;
  • to provide opportunity for excitement;
  • to seek peace among warring states;

- to honour their gods and dead heroes.
