Physics (Essay) Paper 2 Nov/Dec 2015

Question 6

Part 1:  Candidates were required to answer any five questions from this part.

An electron of charge 1.60 x 10-19 C is accelerated under a potential difference of 1.0 x 105 V. Calculate the energy of the electron in joules.

Observation

This question was not popular among the candidates and was correctly answered by most of the responding candidates.  Some however, lost mark for their inability to manipulate numbers in standard form.  Few others lost mark for wrong/missing unit.
The expected answer is:
E  = eV
=     1.6  x  10-19  x 1.0.x 105
=     1.6 x 10-14 J
