Weakness and Remedies

The following were observed as the candidates’ weaknesses:

• poor understanding of formulaes and definitions;
• inability to give applications of LASERS correctly;
• inability to distinguish correctly the difference between intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors;
• inability to handle dimension of quantities;
• poor knowledge of blackbody, perfect black body concept;
• poor knowledge of relative humidity, effects of expansion of water  and heat transfer;
• inability to apply physics principles in explaining the dent of tightly closed container when it is brought out to cool;
• inability to sketch displacement-time graph of a plane progressive wave, and the resultant wave for two given plane progressive wave y1 and y2;
• poor handling of calculations on resistivity, capacitance and electric field intensity.

Based on the observed weaknesses, the Chief Examiners recommended as follows:

• qualified physics teachers only, should be considered;
• use of marking schemes should be encouraged;
• students should be encouraged on the right approach in solving Mathematical related problems;
• candidates should practice exercises from recommended textbooks.
