Question 2

 

Figure 2 shows a link mechanism.  The crank OM rotates about O and N is constrained to move to and fro horizontally.  Plot the locus of point L for one complete revolution.

 

Observation

 

The question requires candidate to:

  1. copy the given layout;
  2. divide the circle into 8/12 equal parts;
  3. locate the different positions of L;
  4. join the points into a smooth curve.

The question was well attempted and candidates performed well.

Candidates were expected to:

(a)draw the given mechanism (crank OM, link NL,                                       

 circle R25 at point O and horizontal line through N);

(b)indicate directions of movement of crank OM and link NL;

(c)divide circle R25 into 8/12  equal parts;

(d)locate different positions of crank OM;

(e)mark out different positions of point L;

(f)join the points L, into a smooth curve;

(g)draw neatly.
