(a)        Characteristics

  • - Mostly stylized while some are naturalistic.
  • - Consists of relief plaques, altarpieces, rattles, manila and memorial heads. Etc
  • - Memorial heads have high collar of beads extending to the chin.
  • - Faces are usually inexpressive with oval shaped eyes and centrally placed pupils.
  • - Lips are thick and almost firmly closed.
  • - Figures bear cultural marks.
  • - There are surface decorations.
  • - Smooth and shining finish.

 (b)      Functions

  • - for royal glorification
  • - to record the activities of the king in his place
  • - to emphasize the authority of the king
  • - to serve as object of worship
  • - representation of the spirit of the dead
  • - used for magical purposes.
