  1. Post – Impressionism is a late 19th Century art movement that emphasized
the artist’s personal response to a subject, rather than focusing on the external effect of the atmosphere on a subject, as in impressionism. By the 1880s a number of artists had began to react against various aspects of impressionism. The artist sought to create more solid, monumental forms and make a more timeless statement.
Though, it took its name from impressionism. In 1910 when Roger Fry a
British art critic organized an exhibition of the paintings of French artist like: Cézanne; Seurat; Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse and the Dutch born Vincent Van Gogh at Grafton Galleries in London.

    • Impressionist painters concentrated on the depiction of a subject’s immediate appearance while, post – impressionist focused on emotional or spiritual meanings that the subject might convey.
    • Although impressionism artists interpreted what they saw, their approach nevertheless, remained rooted in observation of the natural world. Post- impressionisms conveyed their personal responses to the world around them through the use of strong unnatural colours and exaggeration or slight distortion of forms.
    • The impressionist concentrated on capturing the effect of light atmosphere on their subject whereas post – impressionism were concerned on personal emotion.
