Health Education Paper 3 May/June 2015

Question 1

The diagram below illustrates a system in humans.  Study it carefully and answer questions
                 1(a),(b) and (c)

    HScdiagram01

    (a) (i)    Identify the illustrated system                                      [1 mark]
(ii) State one function of the illustrated system                        [1 mark]
(iii) Name the parts labelled I,II,III and IV                                  [2 marks]

    (b) (i)   State two functions of the part labelled IV                     [2 marks]
(ii)  Mention two substances expelled by the part labeled IV     [2 marks]

    (c) List five disorders associated with the illustrated system      [5 marks]

Observation

This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was poor.  In part (a) (i) many candidates could not correctly identify the illustrated system in (a) (ii) candidate correctly state function of the urino-genital system and in (a) (iii) many candidates could not also correctly name the parts labelled I,II,III and IV.  In part (b) (i) many candidates could not correctly state functions of the part labelled IV and in (ii) candidates  could not also mention substances expelled by the part labelled IV of the urino-genital system.

In part (c)  many candidates could not correctly list disorders associated with the urino-genital system.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

1 (a)(i) IDENTIFICATION OF THE SYSTEM

  • Urinary system
  • 1 x 1
(ii) FUNCTION OF THE SYSTEM IN HUMANS

  • excretion
  • osmoregulation
  •
(iii) NAME OF THE PARTS LABELLED
                I – urethra
    II – urinary bladder
    III – ureter
    IV – right kidney

(b)(i) FUNCTIONS OF THE PART LABELLED IV
    -  regulate the water balance of the body (osmoregulation)
    -  remove metabolic wastes/toxic substances
    -  maintenance of PH balance/acid base balance of the blood
    -  formation of urine
(ii) SUBSTANCES EXPELLED BY THE PART LABELLED IV

  • water
  • salts
  • urea
  •
    (c) DISORDERS ASSOCIATED WITH THE SYSTEM IN THE DIAGRAM
    - kidney store
    - glomerulonephritis
    - renal calculi
    - chronic cystitis
    - ectopic kidney
    - tumour of the kidney
    - urethritis
