    (a) Enumerate five causes of a shock  [5 marks]
    (b) State five signs and symptoms of a shock. [5 marks]

Observation

 

Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was poor. In Question (a) many candidates answered it wrongly, in Question (b) many candidates provided vague answers mostly related to electrocution (as electric shock).

The expected answers are as follow:

 (a)  Causes of shock

 -   Severe bleeding/haemorrhage/loss of blood - Heart problem/failure
 -   Nervous injuries    - Severe burns/electric shock
-   Severe infection   - Allergic reaction
-   Hypoglycemia    - Good news/bad news/anxiety/fear/ emotional upset
-   Dehydration/vomiting/diarrhoea/loss of fluid
-   Exposure to excessive cold
-   Poisoning
-   Accident/Trauma                                                                   

 

(b)    Signs and symptoms of shock
-   Coldness     -   Clammy skin

 -   Pale skin    -   Rapid/shallow breathing
-   Nausea/vomiting    -   Anxiety sweating/restlessness/confusion
-   Profuse sweating    -   Weakness/sluggishness
-   Dizziness/stress/fainting  -   Low/weak pulse
