(a) Draw a cross-sectional view of a lead-acid battery showing the positive and
negative plates, separator, filler plug and electrolyte.
(b) List the three methods of differentiating motor vehicle battery terminals.
(c) State two functions of a battery in a motor vehicle.
The expected answers were:
1. (a)
(b) Size (Big = positive; small = negative)
Colour (Red/Brown = positive; Black/Blue = negative)
Signs/Markings (‘+’ = positive; ‘-’ = negative)
(c) Any two functions stated below
Provides electrical power to start the engine
Supplies additional current when the charging system cannot keep up with electrical demand
Stabilizes the voltage for the vehicles charging system
Supplies current to auxiliaries when engine is not running
Stores electrical energy
The question was on Battery. Many of the candidates that attempted part (a) of this question could not draw correctly the cross-sectional view of a lead-acid battery but made some efforts in responding to parts (b) and (c) . The candidates’ performance was reported average. |
