(a) A car owner packed a vehicle overnight. In the morning, the vehicle failed to start
and all the indicator lights also failed to come on. State two possible causes of this
fault.
(b) Draw and label a diagram to show how an alternator is connected to charge a
battery.

The expected answers were:
(a) Any two possible causes
(i) It is possible that one of the battery’s terminals is loose and occasioned open
circuit (Check and confirm, retighten the loose terminal clamp)
(ii) Another part that could experience loose coupling under the influence of
vibration is the ignition key
(Check and confirm, retighten the screws and all other fastening devices on the
switch and drive off)
(iii) Flat battery
(iv) Battery cells are weak
(v) Steady current appliance left on overnight
(b) Any reasonable well-labelled diagram showing how an alternator is connected to
charge a battery.
The question was on Charging System. It was popular with the candidates. Many candidates that attempted it had little depth of knowledge of part (b) because their responses were not encouraging. The performance of candidates was reported to be fair. |
