(b) State the function of a starter motor.
(c) (i) List six components of a starter motor.
(ii) State one function each of any two components mentioned in 2(c)(i).
The expected answers were:
(a) Any one way stated below
Keep the length of the cable connecting the positive terminal of the battery to the
solenoid as short as possible
Stabilize the voltage for the vehicle’s charging system
(b) The function of the starter motor is to crank the engine.
(Additional info: Over a certain speed to enable the fuel in the vehicle to be
atomized and the mixture to be compressed)
(c)(i) Any six components listed below
Drive assembly (i.e. shift lever)
Brushes and commutator
Armature
Main field
Solenoid
Pinion gear
Bushing
(ii) Any reasonable function of any two components above
The question was on Starting System. The question was unpopular with the candidates. Many candidates could not correctly apply the right theory that runs through the question which spelt their undoing. The candidates’ performance was not encouraging. |
