1.(a) state three reason for finishing a concrete floor with a cement-sand screed.
(b) with the aid of a sketch, illustrate the method of laying drain pipe using a
gauge board and a spirit level.
(c) state two safety precautions to be taken in carrying out electrical installation work in a domestic building.
Observation
Majority of the candidates were able to:
- specify the type of foundation used on a moderately firm ground and made-up ground;
- list some tools used in setting out a building;
- sketch a cross-section through a substructure wall.
However, few of them were not able to:
- specify the type of foundation suitable for reinforced concrete framed buildings; and a two storey building on a deep marshy clay soil;
- label the sketch of a substructure wall correctly.
The expected response to question 1 is as given below:

(i)It is cheap and economical;
(ii)It has the ability to resist indentation;
(iii)It is hard wearing;
(iv)It is very easy to lay or place;
(v)It is easy to produce on site;
(vi)It can be laid to any thickness required;
(vii)It can withstand wearing;
(viii)It is resistant to noise;
(ix)It is resistant to thermal movement;
(x)It is resistant to moisture than wooden floor finish;
(xi)It is easy to clean.

(c) Two safety precautions to be taken in a domestic electrical installation:
- wires should be sheathed;
- provision of fuse to check overload;
- provision of earth wire to check stagnant current;
- use of correct wire sizes for installation;
- operatives must wear protective clothing;
- a competent person should carried out the job.
