(a) Outline five achievements of nationalists in Nigeria?
(b) List five differences between citizens and non-citizens.
Observation
The performance of candidates who answered this question was impressive. They gave comprehensive answer to the question. The part B was easier for the candidates to answer as they were able to use their experience as citizens to answer the question. Other expected answers candidates failed to give are:
A. ACHIEVEMENTS OF NATIONALISTS IN NIGERIA
- Citizenship by birth/parentage: Nigerian citizenship may be acquired by birth. This type is conferred on any person born within the borders of a country by Nigerian parent(s). Also any child born by Nigerian parent(s) in any other country is recognized as a Nigerian citizen.
- Citizenship by registration: This type of citizenship may be acquired by children or grandchildren of Nigerian parent(s) and spouse(s) of Nigerians who are non-citizens. This is subject to fulfilling constitutional requirements such as willingness to renounce original citizenship, swearing to oath of allegiance to Nigeria, etc.
- Citizenship by naturalization: This is applicable to non Nigerians who want to become citizens of Nigeria. This is subject to meeting constitutional requirements such as absence of criminal records, not constituting security risks to Nigeria, good character, willingness to renounce original citizenship, etc.
B. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN CITIZENS AND NON-CITIZENS
- Citizens have full constitutional rights whereas non citizens do not.
- Citizens have duties and obligations to their country whereas non citizens do not.
- Citizens see and regard their country as their permanent abode while aliens do not.
- Citizens must pay total allegiance or loyalty to their country while non citizens are not bound.
- Citizens cannot be deported from their country while non citizens can be deported.
- Citizens can work anywhere in the country without work permit while this is not applicable to non citizens.
- Citizens are qualified to register to vote and be voted for.
