(a). Explain the following terms as used in the manufacturing of textiles:
- souring;
- singein;
- printing;
- knitting;
- fabric finishing.
(b). State two advantages of using polyester as a curtain
(c). Differentiate between felt and laminated fabrics.
OBSERVATION
Question 4a i and ii was not answered very well, just few of the candidates did it well (what is scouring and singing); While the other questions in 4a was done well.
The expected answers are:
Scouring: It is the process of using hot soapy water to remove the natural grease and sweat from wool during the manufacturing of woollen fabric.
- Singeing: It is the process of using flame to burn off protruding ends of fibres after a fabric has been manufactured.
- Printing: It is the process of adding colour and motifs to a fabric to make it attractive to consumers.
- Knitting: It is the process of interlocking yarns into loops using special pins or machine.
Note: If candidate’s answer ends at ‘fabric’ deduct ½ mark.
4(b) Advantages of using polyester as curtain was done not too well by the candidates.
- It drapes well.
- It is strong and durable
- It can be easily laundered.
- It does not fade.
- It does not crease.
4(c) Difference between felt and laminated fabrics was not answered very well
The expected answers are:
Felt fabric: It is a fabric made by fusing together fibres (usually woollen fibres) by using heat, pressure and moisture.
Laminated fabric: It is a fabric produced from at least two layers of material held together by heat fusion, adhesive, stitching or chemical tacking.
