Observation

The passage was interesting, the subject matter was within the grasp of the candidates and the information required for answering content questions correctly was very clear in the passage. Some of the candidates did fairly well in this section while some did not demonstrate an understanding of the passage and so copied the passage in response to the questions asked. Many of them could not identify the grammatical name and function of the given expression. Also, many of them could not give the meaning of the expression- “seemed like an eternity’ instead they wrote figures of speech – simile, metaphor, etc. However, most candidates performed poorly. Some of the candidates’ quoted whole sentences from the passage as answers. Also, question 6(h) on lexical items was poorly attempted by most candidates.
