Observation
This was an unpopular question. Candidates that attempted it did not perform very well as they didn’t understand the demands of the question. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers in order to score good marks.
- Nation-states were established from empires, kingdoms and societies
- Introduction of the electoral system/elective principles
- Introduction of political parties
- Introduction of legislative, executive and judicial arms of government
- Introduction of constitutional government
- Development of the press
- Wider political participation
- Creation of political awareness among the people
- Encouraged national integration/unity in diversity
- Led to the emergence of nationalist leaders/groups that fought for independence
- United the educated elite in British West Africa e.g., NCBWA
- Better means of transportation and communication for effective administration
- Introduction of Western education which served as a unifying force among the elite in the struggle for independence
