Identify five ways in which traditional rulers can help the government in the administration of the state.
Observation
This was a very popular question. The candidates performed very well in it. Although, the question is simple and clear, some candidates misunderstood it. The candidates were expected to provide the following as answers to the question.
- Enhance unity and understanding among traditional communities
- Advise government on topical issues
- Assist in local government administration
- Dispute resolution in communities and between communities
- Guardianship of traditional heritage i.e., norms, values and principles
- Regulate the exploitation and use of natural resources to the benefit of their communities
- Serve on public boards and other state institutions
- Position themselves as elder statesmen who offer wise counsel to all in the state
- Serve as link between their subjects and government and vice versa
- Enforcement of legitimate customary laws and practices
- Act as intelligence gathering agents for government
- Holding periodic/regular consultations with government officials
- Mobilizing people for national development/Communal labour
- Assist in revenue mobilization for the state
- Assist in allocating land to people and organizations for community development
