The diagrams below illustrate types of feeding in infants. Study them and answer questions 2(a)(b)(c) and (d).


  1. Name the types of feeding each illustrated in diagrams A and B.

  2. The natural immunity of infants can be improved by which of the illustrated feeding types?

  3. State two advantages of each of the feeding types illustrated in diagrams A and B.

  4. State three disadvantages of the feeding types illustrated in diagram B

Observation


Many candidates attempted this question and their performance was fair. In part (a) majority of the candidates were able to name the

types of feeding in the diagrams labelled A and B. In part (b) they did well in it. In part (c) many candidates were able to state a


dvantages of each of the types of feeding, some candidates also gave wrong answers such as it helps the baby not to be hungry.In part(d)

they were unable to state correctly disadvantages of the feeding types illustrated in diagram B.

      Advantages of Diagram A

      • not expensive.

      • free from germs/infection;

      • does not need preparation/natural.

      • improves emotional/psychological attachment/bond between mother and baby.

      • contains antibodies/provides natural immunity.

      • provides ideal nutrition for baby.

      • improves baby’s I.Q;

      • available at any time.

      • Advantages of Diagram B


      • any person could help in feeding the baby.

      • avoidance of breast biting.

      • enhances breast firmness.

      • baby can be fed anywhere/easy to feed the baby.

      • mothers are not restricted to any diet.

      • serves as alternative method of feeding where mother is infected/dead .

    5. Disadvantages of Diagram B
      • does not contain antibodies;

      • not readily available at all time/expensive;

      • can be contaminated;

      • the right proportion may not be consumed;

      • satisfaction may not be guaranteed;

      • does not create emotional/psychological bond between mother and baby;

      • time consuming.
