(a) List any six higher educational institutions established during the First Republic.
(b) Describe any four social developments during the First Republic.

A popular question answered by about many the candidates. Surprisingly, the majority of candidates that attempted this question could not give up to four educational institutions established during the first republic and dwelt on political developments instead of social developments. However, a few did justice to the question and were adequately rewarded. They were able to describe the following social developments:
(a) (i) Advanced Teachers' Training College, Lagos;
(ii) Advanced Teachers' Training College, Zaria;
(iii) Advanced Teachers' Training College, Ondo;
(iv) Advanced Teachers' Training College, Owerri;
(v) Advanced Teachers' Training College, Kano;
(vi) University of Nigeria, Nsukka (1960);
(vii) Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria;
(viii) University of Lagos, (1962);
(ix) University of Ife (1962).
(b) (i) education was seen as a tool for national development, her.ce the. building of many schools and colleges;
(ii) the government improved the health care system by providing some form of health-care service in each of the divisions of the country while a general hospital was built in each district. There were many dispensaries, health centres, maternity homes in different parts of the country after independence;
(iii) provision of electricity to many towns;
(iv) provision of pipe-borne water to many towns;
(v) recreational facilities were expahded and new ones provided e.g. stadia in cities, parks, etc;
(vi) existing prisons were expanded;
(vii) juvenile homes were established;
(viii) the various missions were given free hand to establish training institutes for their clergymen;
(ix) expansion of information and communication services. |
