Highlight the events that followed the coup d'etat of January 1966 up to the outbreak of the Nigerian Civil War.

This was the most popular questions among the candidates. Although a few dwelt on the Nigerian Civil War, many actually gave creditable answers and were appropriately rewarded. They highlighted the following events:
(i) assassination of prominent political leaders - Ahmadu Bello and S. L. Akintola, Tafawa Balewa and Festus Ekotie-Eboh;
(ii) announcement of new Head of State - General Aguiyi Ironsi;
(iii) appointment of regional military governors;
(iv) suspension of the constitution and political activities;
(v) declaration of unitary government;
(vi) mass killing of the Igbo army officers and civilians in the North;
(vii) counter-coup of July, 1966, and appointment of a new military leader Yakubu Gowon;
(viii) crisis of leadership between Gowon and Ojukwu and attempts to settle the crisis - Aburi meeting;
(ix) declaration of the state of Biafra;
(x) outbreak of civil war. |
