Observation

This question was very unpopular to the candidates and the few ones who attempted it found it
difficult to answer. It required the candidates to mention the policies, activities and actions of the
Royal Niger Company that were so harsh and contrary to the interest, needs and expectations
of the local people. However, a few candidates were able to list the activities of the Company
but could not mention the draconian side of those activities. To get good mark, candidates
were expected to mention the following points:

1. The company exercised absolute political authority in the areas and rulers were    compelled to sign treaties with its officials;

(ii)  The draconian approach to abolish domestic slavery among the Niger Delta people;
(iii)  It monopolised trade on the Oil Rivers;
(iv)  It raised an army (the West African Frontier Force) for conquest and expansion;
(v)  Interference in the internal affairs of the people.
