Question 8
-
Outline any five advantages that Nigeria had over Biafra during the Civil war.
Observation
This was a fairly popular question and was widely attempted by the candidates. Most candidates
demonstrated better understanding of all the factors that contributed to the success of Nigeria
during the Civil war but poor presentation of points and skimpy answers provided, resulted in
low marks for the candidates. Generally, candidates were expected to mention the
following points in order to get good marks:
(i) Nigeria possessed more trained military men than Biafra;
(ii) Nigeria was able to mobilise a larger number of soldiers than Biafra;
(iii) Nigerian soldiers were better equipped;
(iv) Nigeria had easier access to foreign arm dealers to purchase arms and ammunition;
(v) The creation of more states broke the Biafran front by weakening the allegiance of the minorities.
